Chatham Academy papers, 1868-1957

In this collection the minutes of the meetings of the Trustees begin in 1868, but the first volume of minutes also contains acts pertaining to the Academy, 1788-1808 and memoranda and extracts from old minute books, 1815-1868. The second volume contains minutes through 1957. In both minute books, newspaper clippings relevant to the Chatham Academy are included. The third volume is an account book, 1868-1904. The loose papers are mainly insurance payments, bids from contractors, reports of the Building Committee and other material relating to the rebuilding of Chatham Academy after the fire of 1899. A few minutes of the meetings of the Trustees, 1900-1901, are included with the loose papers. In an oversized folder are blueprints for Chatham Academy submitted by Henry Urban for the rebuilding after the fire of 1899. Many of the early records of Chatham Academy, including minute books, are in the E.C. Anderson Papers, Southern Historical Collection of the University of North Carolina.

Chatham Academy was incorporated as a state academy in 1788. It became part of the Savannah public school system in 1869. In 1899 the building burned and a new one was erected with funds in the keeping of the Trustees of Chatham Academy. In 1908, the Chatham Academy fronting on Bull Street was built, also from funds from the Trustees supplying the cost for erection.
